Why Kitchen Garden Mercantile?

Hi, I'm Mim. I believe that truly sustainable living combines long-lasting quality with mindful choices to reduce waste, promote re-use and reduce our footprint on the planet.

My family moved to the bush, and attempted a self-sufficient lifestyle, when I was 12. There, I learned to grow (and forage) food and cook it. During those years the emphasis was on low-budget, home-grown and inventive. Mum loved gourmet cooking and experimenting with complex flavours and exotic dishes. Dad cooked like a peasant and was proud of his ability to create a meal from almost nothing. My Italian Nonna taught me how to make pasta and gnocchi from scratch, among other things! All this combined in me as a love for food, and a love of cooking from scratch—with or without a recipe. Our time living simply also instilled in me an appreciation of doing things by hand because it helps you really feel what's going on, and makes you stop and do things in the time it takes. No rush and a focus on being present during the process.

Decades later, Kitchen Garden Mercantile is a kind of natural progression for me. I've moved to a regional town, with a large neglected garden that I'm slowly improving. No corner shop, much less a nearby supermarket so once again I'm reliant on a well-stocked pantry, a productive garden and a dollop of inventiveness when it comes to meal time.

Kitchen Garden Mercantile offers a range of quality hand tools for your kitchen and garden, eco-friendly cleaning products, curated vintage finds and artisan-made treasures.

And we also ship in eco-conscious packaging.

I believe shopping should be a delight—one you’ll want to experience again and again. Whatever brought you here, I hope you'll find a tool, a vintage item or a touch of inspiration—and that you'll keep in touch and come back again soon!
